8. How can "Riches" become like a god? Well, as an example, think of a stone lying in a field in ancient Israel. Such a stone could be useful for the construction of a house or a wall. On the other hand, if it was set up as "a sacred pillar" or as "a showpiece," it became a stumbling block to Jehovah's people. (Lev. 26:1)
Hmmm, how about these bits of Scripture too?
Psalm 118: 22-24
The stone that the builders rejected
Has become the head of the corner.
This has come to be from Jehovah himself;
It is wonderful in our eyes.
This is the day that Jehovah has made;
We will be joyful and rejoice in it.
Acts 4:8-12
8 Then Peter, filled with holy spirit, said to them:
"Rulers of the people and older men, 9 if we are this day being examined, on the basis of a good deed to an ailing man, as to by whom this man has been made well, 10 let it be known to all of YOU and to all the people of Israel, that in the name of Jesus Christ the Naz·a·rene´, whom YOU impaled but whom God raised up from the dead, by this one does this man stand here sound in front of YOU. 11 This is ‘the stone that was treated by YOU builders as of no account that has become the head of the corner.’ 12 Furthermore, there is no salvation in anyone else, for there is not another name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must get saved."
Luke 20:13-19
13 At this the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my son the beloved. Likely they will respect this one.’ 14 When the cultivators caught sight of him they went reasoning with one another, saying, ‘This is the heir; let us kill him, that the inheritance may become ours.’ 15 With that they threw him outside the vineyard and killed him. What, therefore, will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16 He will come and destroy these cultivators and will give the vineyard to others."
On hearing [this] they said: "Never may that happen!" 17 But he looked upon them and said: "What, then, does this that is written mean, ‘The stone which the builders rejected, this has become the chief cornerstone’? 18 Everyone falling upon that stone will be shattered. As for anyone upon whom it falls, it will pulverize him."
19 The scribes and the chief priests now sought to get their hands on him in that very hour, but they feared the people; for they perceived that he spoke this illustration with them in mind.
Yep - looks like the WTS have rejected the most important lump of stone they ever set eyes on and treated it as valueless! I wonder whether they know the actual reason for those words in the Psalm? By their translation (although it varies greatly throughout their own Bible as can be seen above!) it would appear that they don't understand that the original stone rejected by the builders was referring to the one which ended up becoming the cornerstone for the Temple in Jerusalem - the one upon which all the others rest and upon which the shape and location of the building is dependent.
Watchtower - YOU'RE BUILDING IN THE WRONG PLACE AND ON THE WRONG FOUNDATION!!!!
Perhaps Jesus might be both the useful, valuable stone AND the 'showpiece' stumbling block - if you leave it lying in the field, you're gonna trip over it!
